The local VITA program is the first step of the Financial Stability Partnership outlined by United Way of America. United Way of Adams County has expanded the work it does to impact our community through a national initiative focused on realistic solutions that increase financial stability and long-term economic independence for individuals and families.
United Way Volunteer Larry Shepherd first learned about the VITA program during a national United Way conference where other local United Ways shared their experiences in developing and providing the program in their communities. “Every person said the VITA program is a great asset for the community and a unique opportunity for United Way to work first hand with community members.
It is a unique way for us to partner our network of volunteers with a well-organized service that increases the available income of nearly every family served. For a small budget, this program has the potential to provide at a minimum, savings of the tax preparation and filing costs, and up to more than $4,000 of Earned Income Tax Credit in some cases where families have not applied in the past.”
In 2011, VITA volunteers prepared volunteers prepared 480 tax returns, a 28% increase from 2010. Read more.
