Joe Bonansinga Award

Joe Bonansinga Community Service Award

Each year, United Way of Adams County and Rotary Club of Quincy present the Joe Bonansinga Community Service Award to an individual who exemplifies the highest standards of community service. Named after its first recipient in 1998, the award honors exceptional community leaders who demonstrate:

  • A high level of service and leadership by example.

  • An intensity of energy in their work that invigorates and inspires others.

  • Longevity of service and work that nurtures the community.

  • Choosing commitments based on the needs of others and the benefit to the community

  • The true joy of helping others.

Phil Conover is the 2020 recipient of the Joe Bonansinga Community Service Award

Conover was honored at the noon Rotary of Quincy meeting on Tuesday, September 1 as this year's Joe Bonansinga Community Service Award winner, a recognition that was established in 1998 to spotlight an individual who exemplifies the highest standards of making a positive impact on the Quincy region. A panel of individuals representing United Way Board leaders, plus members of the Rotary Club, evaluated the nine nominations for this year's award.

Conover rose to the top among the nominees for the impact he has had over more than 50 years of volunteering for different organizations at various levels within the Quincy community. Those organizations include the Adams County Together Task Force, Blessing Hospital, Community Foundation of Quincy Area, Friends of Unit #4 School District, Great River Economic Development Foundation, John Wood Community College, Quincy Area Chamber of Commerce, Quincy Notre Dame Foundation, Quincy University and United Way of Adams County.

Other nominees for the award were the late Terry Anastas, Ivetta Cooper, Carlos Fernandez, Joe Henning, Laura Sievert, Sarah Stephens, Roy Webb and Dennis Williams.

Joe, pictured under the goal banner from the 1997 United Way Campaign, was the first chairman to lead a campaign that exceeded the $1,000,000 mark. Near the close of the campaign, he inspired campaign volunteers to reach the goal saying, "Anything less is not acceptable for this community." His leadership and vision still inspire us today.
